Music

At Co-op Academy Friarswood, Music is an integral part of our curriculum which is highly valued by staff and pupils alike. Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. We believe that a high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.

Children in our Nursery and Reception classes enjoy music as part of their curriculum. They learn to develop a love of music, regularly listening, responding to a variety of music styles as well as singing and learning lots of well- known songs and rhymes. All pupils in EYFS, KS1 and KS2 take part in weekly music lessons.

At Co-op Academy Friarswood, we use Charanga music resources which gives children the opportunity to listen and appraise, sing, play, improvise compose and perform. Our children develop their musical knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a fun and engaging manner. Children learn about the elements of music which are incorporated in their own compositions. A variety of percussion instruments are used within learning, with KS1 and KS2 pupils having a particular focus on the glockenspiel.

Through our partnership with Entrust, children have the opportunity to have either woodwind or string instrumental lessons. There are regular opportunities to perform and showcase their skills to an audience.

At Co-op Academy Friarswood, we believe that singing is an incredible tool to promote self-confidence and an opportunity for all children to feel valued and united. Children sing regularly in their classrooms, but also take part in class assemblies and fantastic school shows. Our KS2 choir has been a popular extra-curricular club and open to all of KS2. It has promoted the Co-op ‘Ways of Being’ and has offered many performance opportunities inside and outside of school. We hope to resume choir rehearsals as soon as it is safe to do so and when bubbles can mix.

Here at Co-op Academy Friarswood, we are passionate about developing pupils’ artistic and musical skills, where all children can feel a great sense of achievement, increase self-confidence and develop their creativity.
