Curriculum Intent and Rationale
Co-op Academy Friarswood strives to provide our children with a rich and broad curriculum within which all pupils can learn and achieve their best. Our curriculum delivers the National Curriculum and Early Years Curriculum in an exciting and purposeful way. It allows children to return to and build upon previous learning, applying skills and knowledge to new challenges. Cross-curricular links are exploited to make learning interesting, meaningful and relevant. The curriculum is enhanced through visits, visitors and special events throughout the year. We make links with our local environment and local people wherever we can. This will help the content be more purposeful and meaningful for our children. All curriculum leaders ensure there is a progression in skills, knowledge and vocabulary.
Our curriculum includes activities appropriate to the age and development of our pupils that will help to prepare them positively for life in Modern Britain and which actively promote the fundamental British Values along with our STAR values (Safe, Trust, Achieve and Resilience) and the Co-op Ways of Being (Be yourself always, Show you care, Do what matters most, Succeed together).
By offering this broad and balanced curriculum our children will leave us as:
- Well-rounded citizens of the future
- Confident and skilled communicators
- Contributors to their local and global community
- Possessing the self -belief to lead a happy and fulfilled life
- Resilient learners who aim high and work towards their goals and dreams in life
The governors and staff are committed to ensuring that each and every child, no matter their background or circumstance, reaches their potential and leaves us ready for the next stage in life.

We are currently learning
At Co-op Academy Friarswood, we use a range of text to support and challenge children with their reading.
The main reading schemes we use are:
Oxford Reading Tree
We teach Phonics through the ‘Letters and Sounds’ scheme.
With changes to the new curriculum, we have rearranged our reading scheme books. All our books are all still relevant but the colour bands may not match the new phonics phases. When children read to a member of staff, the staff will make sure your child / children bring home reading books appropriate to them. These reading books may be of different colour bands but please do not let this worry you. Your child’s book will be changed every week. If your child requires a new reading book more often please record any reading done at home in your child’s learning diary / reading record.
